Bio

I've always known I was a nerd and it took me years to grow into and accept it for how awesome it is; but now I know I am a blerd, and that's even better. I am an aspiring TV writer who watches a lot of television and am working on the writing part. I want there to be more black TV writers/showrunners and shows with more diverse casts. Things that contributed to my nerdiness include a love for Harry Potter, Joss Whedon, and Disney movies. You can find me in church on Sunday and in front of the TV the rest of the week. I'm super glad to discover other black nerds. Connect with me; let's talk about TV!

  • I am BlerdNation because...

I've always been a nerd, but I didn't always know I was a black nerd until recently and understanding that has helped me with the identity crisis many of us seem to have suffered when we didn't like the things other black people seemed to like. I am blerdnation because I realize that I can like whatever I want and still be black. I don't have to think I'm an oreo or some other cutesy (though delicious) term, I can just be me. A black nerd. And darn proud of it.

  • Who is your blerd role model? Why?

My first thought was Shonda Rhimes (for the reasons many other blerds on this site mentioned) but I need to go back to Bill Cosby. He's a my celebrity grandpa; I love him a lot. I love that he was able to bring a multidimensional black family to television as well as college age black college students (blerds of the early 90s) on The Cosby Show and A Different World. He really helped foster the age of black television shows from the 90s that even today we miss and for some reason haven't been able to recreate. Bill Cosby did a lot for black representation on television and I hope more people, like myself, can build on that.

  • How do you stay connected to other blerds?

Since discovering that there are other blerds like me, I've been connecting on Twitter. I haven't met too many blerds in real life, so finding others on Twitter and just discovering what a blerd is has helped me feel less like the odd ball of my different real life social groups. As an introvert, connecting via social media is perfect for me.

  • What are your goals/passions?

I want to be a TV writer. I love stories and I love the way television can tell a story like no other medium. When you're the type of person to become invested in a character or a world, a movie or book isn't enough. Those media don't allow for the sheer amount of hours or stories in that universe that television does. I'm still figuring out how I am going to pursue this passion, but TV writing is the career that makes my heart pitter patter with fear and excitement. The same awesome, nerdy stuff that we love, I want there to be the equivalent of that with diverse casts and writers. (I currently have the seed of an idea that would basically be The Prestige but with Harlem Renaissance black magicians.) I want to be as awesome as Shonda Rhimes and hopefully by then we won't have just the one blerd, tv writer representative.

  • What are you listening to, watching, or reading that impacts you or that is giving you a different perspective?

Recently I've been into Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator tests. I've spent hours typing my friends and learning how the different types really tell us who we are and how and why we might react to things the way we do. Since discovering I am an INFJ, I've learned about myself, my strengths and insecurities, and that there are others who have the same idiosyncrasies of personality that I do.

  • What advice would you give to other blerds?

Since discovering other blerds exist, I've really come to realize that there is someone else like you in the world, you just have to search for them. And they may not be as far away as they seem. I thought I was the only Christian, black, girl who liked Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and anything by Joss Whedon, but I'm not! There are others who like what you do too. Don't be afraid to look for them.

  • What's your Hogwarts House?

    Hufflepuff!
